What Is a Porcelain Crown?
A dental crown is a cap that covers your entire tooth; they are used to preserve your natural tooth in different situations, such as severe tooth decay or after a root canal. There are even some cosmetic applications for porcelain crowns. At Northborough Family Dental, we use CEREC restorations designed in our dental office; our process is streamlined because we don't have to rely on an outside dental lab to create your custom crown.
CEREC is a technology that stands for CEramic REConstruction, and it allows us to create same-day restorations. You won't have to endure messy impressions, temporary crowns, multiple shots, or long wait times for your dental crown to be completed. In one office visit, you will have a beautiful new porcelain crown.
When Do You Need a Porcelain Crown?
There are several different circumstances that might cause your dentist to recommend a dental crown. Some of the reasons for a dental crown include the following:
Severe tooth decay – When you have a small cavity, your dentist may simply place a filling in your tooth, but if the cavity is extremely large or if your tooth is severely decayed, a dental crown can help restore your tooth.
Chipped or cracked teeth – Even though tooth enamel is extremely strong, your teeth can still chip or break. Dental crowns can help hold your tooth together and improve its appearance.
Misshapen teeth – One application for dental crowns is for cosmetic reasons. If your teeth have gaps between them or are misshapen, you can cover your teeth with dental crowns to give you a more uniform look. Your dentist can tell you if cosmetic dental crowns are possible for you.
After root canal therapy – Your dentist might have to perform a root canal to save one of your natural teeth; often, they will place a dental crown on top of the tooth after the root canal.
On top of a dental implant – If you have missing teeth and undergo a dental implant procedure, a dental crown is placed on top of the dental implant as a replacement for your missing tooth.
What Are the Advantages of Porcelain Crowns?
If you are curious about the benefits of dental crowns, there are several to consider:
- Cosmetically, porcelain crowns make your teeth look better. Dental crowns may be a good option if you don't like how your smile looks.
- Dental crowns improve the function of your teeth. Covering a damaged or decayed tooth can allow you to eat normally again.
- Crowns can help you speak better; if you have missing teeth and have dental implants and crowns placed in your mouth to replace those teeth, you will regain your ability to talk like you once could.
The Dental Crown Procedure
In our Northborough dental office, we are proud to offer CEREC same-day porcelain crowns for your convenience. The process we use is as follows:
1. Your natural tooth will be prepared for your new dental crown.
2. We will take digital impressions and images of your teeth and then share those images with the CAD/CAM software to create a 3-D model of your affected tooth.
3. Next, our milling machine will create your dental crown from a piece of porcelain.
4. Once complete, we will place your porcelain crown in your mouth, cement it in place, and check the fit.
How to Make Your Dental Crown Last
Now that you have your new porcelain crown, you can expect it to last for ten to fifteen years or longer if you take good care of it. Maintaining good oral health can help your dental crown last longer, so be sure to do the following:
- Brush your teeth twice a day.
- Floss your teeth every day.
- Avoid hard and sticky foods.
- Visit your dentist for regular exams and cleanings.
