If you are considering dental implants to replace a lost tooth or already have them, you may have concerns about how they affect other aspects of your health, like getting an MRI.
The short answer is that dental implants, usually made of titanium or zirconia, do not typically affect an MRI scan because these are non-magnetic materials.
It is a good idea, however, to inform your doctor about dental implants or any other dental work you may have since the metals used in crowns, braces, dentures, or metal fillings may contain materials that could impact your scan.
How Does a Dental Implant Work?
A tooth implant is comprised of three integral components that work together to replace a missing tooth:
- The titanium implant — Titanium is biocompatible, so it integrates naturally with your bone and becomes part of your dental anatomy when it replaces your root.
- The abutment — This piece securely connects your dental implant to its restoration.
- The restoration — We use a porcelain crown to restore a single tooth, and for multiple teeth, we use a bridge or denture to restore your smile.
No other tooth replacement option at this time replaces both your root and tooth.
